Our next Success Story truly embodies the spirit of the Sofema Leadership Scholarship Program - fostering passion, growth, and the confidence to shape the future of aviation. For Ștefan-Ciprian Bucur, aviation has been more than a career; it has been a calling since the age of 16, when he first stepped into the Flight Operations Department as an intern. Through the Scholarship, he gained fresh perspectives, strengthened his leadership skills, and applied valuable lessons directly to his rebranding strategy, showing how knowledge and determination can empower meaningful change in the industry.

1. How did you find out about the Leadership Scholarship Program?

I found out about the Sofema Leadership Scholarship Program while scrolling on LinkedIn. I really enjoy using the platform to keep up with everything happening in aviation because it is something I am very passionate about. I had been following Sofema for quite a while already, since many of my colleagues had taken courses with you and recommended them. So when I saw the scholarship announcement, I immediately felt that this was something I really wanted to try for.

2. What motivated you to apply for the scholarship?

I was motivated by the chance to learn new things connected to aviation management, an area I have been passionate about for a long time. I currently run a unique project in Romania where I guide and prepare the next generation who are curious about aviation to start a career in the industry. The scholarship came at the perfect moment because my project is now going through a rebranding process, and I was able to use many of the lessons from the program in my new strategy. I have been working as Cabin Crew for the past 4 years, but my journey in aviation started at the age of 16 with an internship in the Flight Operations Department. Since then I have been involved in many areas of aviation and the past years I focused on flying. I have been involved in different types of operations, including regular flights with traditional carriers and low-cost airlines, as well as charter and ACMI. Each of them comes with its own challenges, opportunities and unique learning experiences. These kinds of courses help a lot to make sense of what you face in daily operations because they give you the tools and mindset to manage situations in a clear and structured way, no matter the environment.

I also graduated from university with a degree in Security Studies, and my thesis was on Aviation Security. Combining my academic background with my aviation experience and now the knowledge I have gained from Sofema, I feel much better prepared for future management roles and for contributing on a larger scale to the industry.

3. What were the most valuable lessons or skills you gained through the program?

The biggest lesson for me was about the importance of teamwork. It was a point that came up again and again in the program, and it is something I strongly believe in. I also learned a lot about both verbal and non-verbal communication and how crucial they are in aviation. Another part I enjoyed was learning how to structure and deliver a good presentation that really engages people. On top of that, the negotiation skills module was very useful and gave me practical tools that will definitely help me save time and resources in the future.

4. How has the scholarship influenced your confidence, mindset, or career opportunities?

I feel that the more you learn, the more clarity and calm you gain in different situations. This program helped me change my mindset because now I look at many things differently, and I understand them better. It definitely boosted my confidence, and I am sure in the future it will also open career opportunities. For now, I am really happy that I can already apply so many of the lessons in the project I am leading in Romania.

5. What did you enjoy most about learning through Sofema Online?

I really liked how the system was designed. The fact that most of the information was written in slides allowed me to take proper notes, and I am the kind of person who likes to have everything structured, written down and organised. I actually filled a whole notebook with everything from the course, which makes it very easy for me to go back whenever I need something. At the same time, the videos were included where necessary, and that made the learning experience very balanced. Overall, I found the structure of the course very effective, and I would definitely recommend this scholarship program to anyone, especially for those who want to do more in aviation, contribute more and prepare themselves for leadership or management roles.
