The Growth and Transformation of Sofema Online: A Conversation with Steve Bentley FRAeS
As Sofema Online (SOL) marks its 13th anniversary in 2026, how does the platform's current state measure up against the goals you originally set when you started back in 2013?
To be honest, I never imagined we would reach a team of 30 people, let alone support 45,000 enrollments in a single year. In 2013, the goal was simply to make high-quality regulatory training accessible to the individual mechanic and the global operator alike. We wanted to bridge the gap between "having the manual" and "truly understanding the regulation." Seeing it evolve into an industry-leading platform with over 525 courses is a testament to the fact that the industry was hungry for technical depth over mere "tick-the-box" compliance.
You’ve often spoken about "Organic Growth" as a core tenet. Why have you avoided the rapid, venture-backed scaling that many other tech-driven platforms pursue?
Aviation is built on stability and safety. Rapid, unsustainable spikes often lead to a "support lag" where the quality of the student experience suffers. By growing organically, we’ve ensured that our development remains rooted in high-quality Customer Solutions. Every new hire and every department restructure is a response to actual student needs, not an artificial growth target. It keeps us grounded and ensures our technical experts stay at the heart of the business.
June 2026 is a historic month for Sofema, with the 200,000th certificate expected to be issued. What does that number represent to you?
It’s an incredible milestone. That isn't just a number; it represents 200,000 moments where an aviation professional has gained the competence to perform their job more safely and effectively. It spans from our start in 2008 with Sofema Aviation Services to this massive digital footprint today. We are extremely proud of that reach because it means we are truly moving the needle on global aviation safety standards.
With 45,000 enrollments projected for 2026, you’ve restructured the team into "8 Pillars." Can you walk us through how this supports the student journey?
To manage that volume without losing the "human touch," we’ve organized our 30-person team into specialized departments—from Training Support and Data Processing to IT-LMS-GDPR. This allows us to maintain a holistic view of performance. If a student is struggling or a company needs a complex training matrix, they aren't just hitting a helpdesk; they are being supported by a structured team that prioritizes Procedural Excellence.
You’ve been a vocal critic of the "Procurement Trap." What do you mean by that, and how does Sofema Online help companies avoid it?
The "Procurement Trap" is when training is treated as a commodity, selected solely on the lowest price by a purchasing department that may not understand the regulatory nuances. This creates organizational risk. We advocate for an SME-led strategy where Compliance Managers and Subject Matter Experts select training based on technical depth. We even offer "Guest Enrollments" so they can "try before they buy"—ensuring the material actually stands up to an auditor's scrutiny.
The Personal Freedom Pass has become your flagship solution. For an individual professional, what makes this more than just an "all-you-can-learn" buffet?
It’s about career acceleration. Instead of paying for a single course, the Personal Freedom Pass gives you a window—6 or 12 months—to gain multiple qualifications. You can complete a CAMO Diploma and move straight into Quality Auditing or Leadership without extra fees. It shifts the focus from "what can I afford to learn?" to "how much can I achieve in six months?"
How does the SOL Plus Membership complement this strategy for those looking for the highest ROI?
SOL Plus is the ultimate "force multiplier" for our delegates. By combining the 10% membership discount with the Freedom Pass, the membership effectively pays for itself. It’s designed to reward those who take their career development seriously, offering a massive library of EASA, FAA, and ICAO-compliant training for a fraction of the cost of individual enrollments.
You’ve mentioned that "Compliance is the floor, not the ceiling." How does SOL move beyond basic regulatory requirements?
We don't just provide content; we provide pathways. Our diplomas, like the AMO or CAMO Advanced, are curated to build genuine competence. We focus on "consultative partnership." When a client has an audit finding, we don't just sell them a course; we help them navigate the shifting sands of regulations to find a permanent solution to that competence gap.
Sofema is launching its own proprietary LMS (Learning Management System) in March 2026. Why was it important to move away from off-the-shelf solutions?
Our requirements have become so exacting that we needed a platform built specifically for the aviation regulatory environment. This new LMS allows us to implement our "Procedural Excellence" vision directly into the user interface, making it easier for delegates to track their progress, access course notes, and manage their certifications while maintaining the highest GDPR and data security standards.
With 525+ courses now in the portfolio, how do you ensure the technical accuracy of such a vast library?
It’s a massive undertaking. We have a dedicated team that monitors EASA, FAA, and ICAO updates daily. Because we are a team of 30 professionals supported by senior consultants, we can update our materials in real-time. We don’t just "set it and forget it." If a regulation changes today, our Training Support and Marketing OPS teams are working to ensure that change is reflected in our content tomorrow.
You are already looking toward 2027 with plans to add at least five more positions. What areas of the business are you focusing on for the next phase of growth?
We will continue to bolster the Customer Solutions Team. As the industry becomes more digital, the need for proactive mentoring and support only grows. We want to ensure that as our enrollment numbers climb, our ratio of experts to students remains the best in the industry.
Finally, Steve, what message do you have for the individual delegate or the HR manager who is currently looking at their 2026 training budget?
Look for the technical depth, demand to see the material beforehand, and choose a path that offers long-term value like our Freedom Pass. We are here to support your journey, and our growth is entirely dedicated to making your compliance and competence management as seamless as possible.
