What is an STC - Supplemental Type Certificate?
A Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) is a document issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) approving a product (aircraft, engine, or propeller) modification. The STC defines the product design change, states how the modification affects the existing type design, and lists serial number affectivity. An STC is typically owned by a FAR 21/Part 21 Design organisation that remains responsible for the “Continuing Airworthiness” of the Product. It also identifies the certification basis listing specific regulatory compliance for the design change.
Information contained in the certification basis is helpful for those applicants proposing subsequent product modifications and evaluating certification basis compatibility with other STC modifications.
What is the relationship between IATA, ICAO & EASA?
EASA is our regulator, and so we must comply with their rules as an operator. ICAO is a United Nations organization that sets out standards and recommended practices (not regulation). SARPS. IOSA is the safety audit that IATA uses to allow operators to be IOSA registered. (The idea of this is to set a certain standard when it comes to safety e.g. for codeshares etc.) IOSA registration is mandatory for an airline to remain a member of IATA.
Is there an FAA equivalent to the EPA?
The nearest FAA equivalent to the European Parts Authority EPA is PMA. PMA (Parts Manufacturer Approval) Parts are Parts designed and produced by companies under FAA approval, but not by the relevant Component’s OEM.
What is the need for an EPA if they have an ETSO?
Not all design solutions or parts and appliances are governed by ETSO, hence the need to provide a procedure for a DOA to supply approved design data to a POA to be able to manufacture and release parts and appliances via Form 1. Typically an ETSO will be a component, whereas an EPA will be a part.
What are the final release dates for JAA Form One? Can we still accept them?
We can accept as JAR 21 /new items/, however, if Repaired JAR 145 then we should establish the parts are still serviceable due to the time since the last repair.
28th September 2004 for Maintenance organizations JAR145 / Part 145.
28th September 2005 design / 28th September 2004 production JAR 21
