Considerations related to the delivery of Safety Systems

Where is your organisations current focus? Is it on compliance or Performance?

This is a significant question because whilst compliance is of course mandatory it is through performance-related developments that we are able to optimise and drive significant savings within the organisation, whilst at the same time ensuring we deliver a safe and effective business environment.

Where does safety come from?
People or Procedures?

Well simply implementing process and procedure is not in itself going to provide an effective solution to the needs of the organisation.
We rely on people to deliver our safety management system and this, in turn, requires a specific and viable organisational culture and senior-led behaviour.

The two major challenges currently faced by each and every organisation are firstly the ability to integrate the SMS across the entire business, and secondly, the Effectiveness of identifying hazards, evaluating the risk in a meaningful way, and developing the most appropriate mitigations.
Any system that is designed in a way that is sympathetic to and fully engaged with the people who are going to use it and work within its framework is far more likely to succeed and deliver the outcomes we strive to achieve.
We need to assess, measure, manage, and develop the competence of our workforce.
We need to understand the need for both external regulatory compliance and internal organisational compliance, moreover, we need to ensure this is done in the most efficient way possible.
We need to focus on performance and to view the data gathered by the SMS as a major management tool that we can employ as a part of our performance-related initiatives.
As an organisation we need to face the dichotomy of balancing production and performance this should be clearly understood and be a major driver for the management team.
It is of paramount importance that we lead from above, any effective safety management system will acknowledge the fact that with respect to safety and the development of a safety culture, the example must be set by the senior managers and to trickle down to the shop floor.

The rationale of Sofema Aviation Services consultants is to support and provide guidance, mentoring, and coaching which helps the organisation develop appropriate outcomes across the business. with decades of experience in commercial aviation, our consultants both collectively and independently have a wealth of experience.
