We usually overestimate our ability to communicate and this can even be magnified when the communication is with people who we know well. Often because we believe we have a deeper level of understanding than is the case.

We should try to speak to people as individuals even when they are in groups. Do not allow yourself to be distracted and focus on genuinely delivering your message with both enthusiasm and energy.

Knowing the Subject Matter is Essential

You really do need to know the subject, this is a fundamental part of establishing rapport and respect with your audience (both of which are essential for effective communication).

Pay particular attention to your audience and strive to build the connection, adjust your message so that it resonates with the audience, focus on getting your message across without overdoing it, and seek questions as a way of ensuring the message is received.

Encourage People to Speak

You do not need to have the last word (even it is better if you do not). Provide the speaker with ample opportunity to speak freely.

Listening isn’t just about hearing words it's also about paying attention to body language. As well as the words also listen to the tone, speed, and volume of the voice.

By tuning into the body language of the person who is speaking. You have an opportunity to pay attention to the body language. In this way, you will be able to gain a sense of understanding concerning facts and opinions that people may be unwilling to voice.

Making an Emotional Connection

People remember how you made them feel, so connect with people through emotional behaviour in a way that shows them you are real human and transparent. Express your feelings openly and you are far more likely to be able to develop emotional connections with your audience.

Active Listening

Active listening involves listening with all senses. Active listening is a technique that ensures people feel they are being heard which is an essential element of good communication.

Providing full attention while you are listening is important as it ensures the correct message that you are interested in the subject, in addition, use both verbal and non-verbal messages maintain eye contact, nod your head, and smile.

By providing such 'feedback' the person who is speaking will feel more comfortable resulting in the communication being more open and honest.
