Interview with Steve Bentley FRAeS: Championing the Future of Aviation Leadership through Education
In this exclusive interview, Steve Bentley, FRAeS, founder of Sofema Online, shares the vision and driving force behind the.
Launched to empower the next generation of aviation professionals, the initiative reflects Sofema’s commitment to accessible, high-quality leadership training. With insights on program structure, candidate selection, and the evolving demands of the industry, Steve offers a compelling look at how education can shape the future of aviation leadership.
Q1: Steve, thank you for joining us. Can you begin by sharing the inspiration behind launching the Sofema Online Leadership Scholarship Program?
Absolutely. The idea originated from our deep commitment to supporting the global aviation community, especially young professionals with the ambition to lead. We recognised early on that while technical knowledge is critical, the ability to lead with vision, resilience, and collaboration is what defines future industry leaders. So, we made a decision—to give back. In 2022, we launched the Scholarship Program, and now, four years later, it’s become one of the most meaningful initiatives Sofema has ever undertaken.
Q2: What is the core mission of the scholarship, and how does it align with Sofema Online’s broader educational philosophy?
Our mission is to provide access to high-quality, leadership-focused training to aspiring professionals regardless of their geographic or financial limitations. At Sofema Online, we believe that accessible education is a powerful equaliser. The scholarship enables us to reach talented individuals worldwide and empower them with the skills needed to thrive and lead in complex aviation environments.
Q3: Sofema is investing €50,000 annually into this program. That’s a significant commitment. What drives that level of dedication?
Simply put—belief. We believe in aviation as a global engine of progress, and for it to flourish, it needs strong leadership at all levels. €50,000 each year is an investment in the future of the industry. We see it as planting seeds. Every participant is a potential game-changer, a future CEO, safety leader, or regulator. We’re proud to stand behind them.
Q4: For those unfamiliar with Sofema Online, can you give a brief overview of the platform’s history and role in the aviation training ecosystem?
Sofema Online, or SOL, was founded as a sister company to Sofema Aviation Services to meet the growing demand for flexible, regulatory-compliant training. Since its launch, SOL has grown rapidly, offering over 400 courses and diplomas to more than 100,000 students worldwide. We’re proud to say we’re one of the leading providers of online aviation training, trusted by both individuals and major organisations globally.
Q5: What makes the Leadership Scholarship Program unique compared to other training or leadership initiatives in the market?
First, it’s completely free for the selected participants—there are no hidden costs or strings attached. Second, it’s structured around 8 carefully curated courses focused on core leadership competencies like communication, team development, negotiation, and public speaking. Finally, participants also gain access to exclusive workshops with me personally, adding a live mentoring element that enhances the whole experience.
Q6: Can you walk us through the structure of the scholarship program? What can participants expect?
Certainly. Once selected, participants will be enrolled in a six-month program consisting of 8 leadership and management courses, each with its own certification. After completing all eight, they can apply for a Future Aviation Leaders Scholarship Certificate—a unique recognition of their achievement. Alongside the core courses, participants also attend interactive online workshops, which provide context, share insights from the field, and allow for live engagement.
Q7: The application process includes answering 15 questions and writing a motivation letter. What are you looking for in potential candidates?
Authenticity and ambition. We’re not looking for perfect answers—we’re looking for real people with a passion for aviation and a vision for their future. The motivation letter is where candidates can really show us who they are. What excites them? What challenges have they overcome? How do they want to make a difference? Those are the stories that stand out.
Q8: You mention that authenticity is valued over ‘ChatGPT-style’ answers. Can you elaborate on why that matters?
It’s simple—we want real human voices, not polished, generic ones. Leadership requires self-awareness, honesty, and reflection. AI tools can’t replicate that personal journey. When someone writes from the heart, it shines through. That’s what we’re encouraging.
Q9: What advice would you give to someone who’s unsure whether they’re "ready" to apply?
Apply anyway. Readiness isn’t about already being a leader—it’s about the willingness to grow into one. If you’re passionate about aviation and have a desire to develop professionally, this program will help you move forward. We’re looking for potential, not perfection.
Q10: What does this initiative mean to you personally as someone who has spent decades in the aviation industry?
This initiative is very close to my heart. After more than 50 years in aviation, I’ve seen how critical strong leadership is. I also know what it’s like to need a break—to have potential but lack the resources. If we can help even a handful of future leaders take that next step, then we’ve done something worthwhile. That’s a legacy I’m proud of.
Q11: Looking ahead, how do you see the role of leadership evolving in aviation, especially post-pandemic and amidst digital transformation?
We’re entering an era where leaders must be not only operationally competent but also emotionally intelligent, digitally fluent, and sustainability-minded. The challenges ahead—cybersecurity, automation, environmental responsibility—require a new kind of leadership. Our program is designed to lay the foundation for that.
Q12: Finally, what would you say to someone considering applying for the 2025 edition of the Leadership Scholarship?
The future of aviation leadership starts now. If you’re passionate about making a difference in this industry—whether as an engineer, manager, safety officer, or entrepreneur—this is your opportunity. Invest in yourself. Take the leap. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
Apply before August 31st to be part of the 2025 Edition of the Sofema Online Leadership Scholarship Program and join 100 future aviation leaders in a journey of growth, challenge, and transformation.
